Hidden Camp Farm, located in Canajoharie, New York sits on 140 acres of lush rolling farmland. The farm derives its name from the 1930′s original camp-site fireplace & chimney discovered in the woods by John and his family.
Hidden Camp Farm is home to John King, his wife Ruth, and their five children. The Kings hail originally from Lancaster County, Pa., but moved to upstate New York seven years ago.
In 2009, they bought an old farm place and now as a family raise 7,000 chickens who roam on 10 acres of pasture, laying some 5000 eggs a day. At night, the birds come home to roost in a big open barn where they can also move freely. The Kings pride themselves on feeding their birds certified organic, soy-free feed -- which, John says, gives the yolks a "nice orange color." The eggs are sold in stores throughout New York and Western Massachusetts.
The King children Daniel, Fannie Mae, Linda, Leon and Lillian, who range in age from 15 years to 11 months old are an integral part of the work, as the older ones are expected to pitch in. "It's nice work for the children to collect the eggs when they come home from school," said John. They also help with egg washing and packing, which is done by hand three days a week.
In addition to raising laying hens, the Kings run a full-scale organic dairy with a herd of fifty happy grass fed Jersey cows. The milk is used by Maple Hill Creamery to make 100% grass fed organic yogurt. The Kings also offer certified organic pastured turkey which they hand-raise for Thanksgiving. Coming soon, Hidden Camp Farm will offer it’s customers raw grass fed organic cheese.
